Car maintenance

Every car needs regular refueling and repairs. While traveling on the worldmap, you will see the car's degree of damage and how much fuel is left in its tank.

  • As fuel all cars use both Small Energy Cells or Micro Fusion Cells. To refuel a car simply have a bunch of SEC or MFC in your inventory and use them on the car. If you did it right, the message "You charge the car with more power" will appear.
  • Tip: Always store some spare SEC or MFC in the car's trunk, so in case you forgot to recharge you won't be stuck with your car somewhere in the desert, when the tank surprisingly got empty.
  • To repair your car press hotkey 8 and simply click the car with the yellow cross hairs pointer. Successful repair will be confirmed with the message "The car was repaired successfully" and rewarded with 10 exp.
  • Tip: If you have low repair skills you can use a tool or a Super Tool Kit to improve your repair performance.

Car keys

When purchasing a car, it gets assigned its own key with a unique ID-number.

  • In case you want to share the car with more players, you can go to one of the car stores to make a copy. You have to carry the key in your active weapon slot, then talk to the car seller and choose the option "Make a copy of this key". One key copy costs 1000 caps.
  • In case you lost a key, you can make a new one. First you will have to buy a blank from one of the car stores for 400 caps. Then you put the blank in your active weapon slot and attempt to lockpick your car by pressing the hotkey 2 and clicking the car with the yellow crosshairs pointer. This action requires a pretty high lockpick skill value, although some cars are easier to pick than others. When the attempt was successful you enter the worldmap and you can see that the blank key now got a new unique ID.

Electronic Lock

Instead of using regular keys you can use electronic lock. First you must obtain it, you can find it in dungeons, shops, you can buy it from other players - it is quite common item. Once you have it firstly use "hand" option over your lock and set a password, next hold left mouse button over your vehicle till context menu will got displayed, hover over the backpack option and select the lock. To install it you need to have key in your hand. You can only install locks in your own tent and bases in which you are able to add people.

From now on the character that made the lock won't be needing anything to ride. The other characters that would try to ride your electronically locked car will have to type in 4 digit password that you set earlier. Beware! The lock can be lockpicked using electronic lockpick. Once lockpick is lockpicked anyone can use the car without any kind of security and also it's vehicle id will be turned to zero.

Car Upgrading

There's plenty of things you can do with your vehicle.

  • You can make the car ride on Rotgut instead of fusion cells (or in addition actually), to do so visit a mechanic in either Hub or New Reno, ask him about other services (remember to put the car key in your active hand slot) and pay him 6000 caps.
  • You can change it's lock to electronic one (mentioned above).
  • You can decrease fuel consumption by installing Advanced Fuel Converter.
  • You can make your vehicle faster by installing one of more advanced engines, found in dungeons.
  • You can change appearance of your vehicle. Check Car Paints page for more information.

Selling a Car

If you no longer need an vehicle you can sell it to NPCs for half of its price. To do so put an key to that car in your active hand slot then talk to a mechanic in either Hub or New Reno. If your car is protected by electronic lock, firstly you need to get rid of that lock, then buy a new blank key. Put that blank key in your hand and ask Mechanic about buying your car. Since blank keys id is 0 and car without any lock has also id 0 it will work.
