Overview
The Job System is a repeatable quest system where players take on mercenary contracts from the Scout Leader in Junktown. Each job sends you to a procedurally generated location to eliminate all hostiles within a time limit. Jobs scale across four difficulty tiers, with harder jobs introducing random combat modifiers, tougher enemies, and greater rewards. Payment comes in the form of Scrip Coins, a local Junktown currency exchangeable for gear at the Quartermaster.
How It Works
Taking a Job
Speak to the Scout Leader in Junktown, located in the northern part of town. On your first conversation, he explains how the system works. You can ask him about the types of jobs available, how difficulty works, payment, the Quartermaster, bringing allies, and time limits. When ready, choose one of four difficulty options:
- Easy — a simple warm-up job with few modifiers
- Normal — a moderately challenging job
- Hard — a tough gig with significant threats
- Very Hard — the worst problems Junktown has to offer
The Job Location
Once you accept a job, a temporary location appears on your world map. The location is randomly chosen from a pool of eight possible sites: Infested Ruins, Abandoned Cave, Cliff Farm, Forest Camp, Canyon Road, Mountain Bridge, Mountain Tunnel, or Power Station. The location is visible only to you and your party members.
The area will be populated with enemies — either humanoids (gangs, ghouls, punkers, raiders, robbers, or thugs) or creatures (coyotes, deathclaws, molerats, mantis, golden geckos, or geckos), depending on the nature of the location. Both the enemy type and the location are determined when the job is created.
Scattered throughout the location are loot containers. The majority contain common scrap and junk, while some hold mid-tier loot and a few contain high-tier valuables. Bookcases and shelves may also hold useful finds.
Combat Modifiers
Harder jobs come with randomly assigned modifiers that change how the enemies fight. The number of modifiers increases with difficulty:
- Armored Enemies — enemies have increased damage resistance
- Healthy Enemies — enemies have significantly more health
- Irradiated — the entire area is irradiated, with radiation storms overhead
- Reinforced — more enemies than usual
- Aggressive Enemies — enemies deal increased damage
- Active Enemies — enemies recover Action Points faster
- Regenerating Enemies — enemies rapidly regenerate health
- Fast Enemies — enemies move faster
- Poisonous Enemies — enemy attacks inflict poison
- Bleeding Enemies — enemy attacks cause bleeding wounds
- Locked Containers — loot containers require Lockpick skill to open
Time Limit
Every job has a strict time limit that decreases with difficulty:
- Easy: 45 minutes
- Normal: 35 minutes
- Hard: 25 minutes
- Very Hard: 15 minutes
If the timer expires before all enemies are eliminated, the job is failed and the location disappears. Completing the job faster than half the allotted time awards a bonus to your XP reward — the quicker you finish, the bigger the bonus.
Completing the Job
The objective is straightforward: eliminate every hostile in the location. When only a single enemy remains on a given map, it will aggressively seek out and attack any player it can find. Once all hostiles across all maps of the location are dead, the job is complete.
Party Play
If you are in a party when accepting a job, all party members currently on the same map are added to the contract. Every member can see the job location on their world map, and all members receive XP and a reward box upon completion. Only one party member can hold an active job at a time, however.
Abandoning a Job
You can abandon a job by speaking to the Scout Leader and requesting removal. This deletes the job location and frees you to take a new contract. There is no penalty for abandoning.
Requirements
- No level, skill, or faction requirements
- You cannot accept a new job while you already have an active one
Rewards
Experience
XP is awarded based on difficulty, with a bonus for finishing quickly:
- Easy: 300 XP (base)
- Normal: 500 XP (base)
- Hard: 750 XP (base)
- Very Hard: 1,000 XP (base)
Completing the job in under half the time limit grants up to double the base XP, scaling with how much time remains.
Reward Box
Every party member who contributed receives a reward box matching the job's difficulty. All boxes contain:
- Scrip Coins — Junktown's local currency, exchangeable at the Quartermaster
- Super Stimpaks — guaranteed medical supplies
- Additional items — can include combat drugs, high-grade crafting resources, and weapon modifications
Higher difficulty boxes contain more scrips, more stimpaks, and have a better chance at rarer modifications. Hard and Very Hard boxes are of pre-war quality, yielding superior loot.
Quartermaster
Scrip Coins are redeemed at the Quartermaster, located in the first building south of the Scout Leader. He trades gear in exchange for scrips. His stock is communal equipment scavenged for mercenaries — serviceable but not military-grade.
Achievement
Completing jobs progresses the Job Hunter achievement, tracked across your character's career.
