Overview

The Junktown Arena Tournament is a daily PvP team competition where squads of up to three players face off in a shrinking arena. The tournament follows a Swiss-system format — five rounds where teams are paired by similar win/loss records — followed by single-elimination rounds among the top performers. NPC teams fill out the bracket, ensuring every tournament has at least ten competing teams. Winners earn valuable reward boxes containing pre-war gear, resources, drugs, weapon mods, and a rare chance at implants.

How It Works

Sign-Up Phase

A tournament begins every day with a 30-minute sign-up window, announced globally. Players head to Junktown and speak with the Tournament Clerk to register. There are two ways to join:

  • Join as a team — If you are in a party of up to three players, the entire party is registered as a team. The team is named after the party leader (e.g. "Tandi's Team"). Parties larger than three are rejected.
  • Join solo — Solo players are placed into an existing incomplete team, or form a new one-person team if none are available.

Players already registered in the tournament cannot sign up again.

After sign-ups close, the system fills any remaining slots with NPC teams until there are at least ten teams and an even total count. NPC teams are given randomized names drawn from a large pool of gang and faction names.

Swiss Rounds

Once the tournament begins, five Swiss rounds are played. Each round:

  1. Teams are sorted by their current score (wins minus losses).
  2. Teams are paired off — 1st vs 2nd, 3rd vs 4th, and so on.
  3. If there is an odd number of teams, the lowest-ranked team receives a bye (automatic win).
  4. All matches play out simultaneously in separate arena instances.

Elimination Rounds

After the fifth Swiss round, only teams with the highest win count advance. All other teams are eliminated. The survivors then play single-elimination brackets until only one team remains.

The Arena

Each match takes place on its own isolated arena map. Arena layouts are randomized — one of several pre-built structures is selected for each match.

Key arena mechanics:

  • Pre-fight phase (30 seconds) — Both teams are separated by indestructible barriers. This gives players time to gear up from loot crates in their starting area.
  • Barrier drop — After 30 seconds, the barriers are removed and combat begins. NPC contestants become aggressive toward the opposing team.
  • Shrinking zone — After 5 minutes, the arena begins to shrink toward the center. The safe zone reduces in stages (60 → 40 → 20 → 10 → 5 hexes). Players caught outside the zone take heavy damage (35% of max health, or 50% in the final stage).
  • Sudden death — If the match drags on, a draw timer starts. If neither team is eliminated when time expires, the match is declared a draw.
  • Friendly fire — Damage dealt to teammates is reflected back to the attacker, preventing griefing.

Gear System

Upon entering the arena, all of a player's personal equipment is temporarily stored in a secure container. Players must arm themselves from arena-supplied loot crates, which contain standardized weapons (miniguns, plasma rifles, sniper rifles, super sledges, etc.), armor (metal armor mk II, combat armor mk II, tesla armor), and ample ammunition. Each player also receives 10 super stimpaks.

After the match ends — win, loss, or draw — all arena gear is removed and the player's original equipment is to be received from tournament clerks.

Contestant AI

NPC contestants are armed with a random selection of arena-grade weapons and actively hunt opposing team members. They use super stimpaks to heal when below half health and will retaliate immediately when attacked.

Spectating

While matches are in progress, all players can spectate any ongoing match by speaking to the Tournament Clerk and selecting a match from the list. Spectators cannot be targeted, and have full vision of the arena. Entering as spectator strips items and leaves them with clerk.

Requirements

  • No minimum level is enforced
  • Party size of 3 or fewer (if joining as a group)
  • Must not already be registered in the current tournament
  • Must sign up before the 30-minute registration window closes

Walkthrough

  1. Wait for the global announcement that a tournament is starting in Junktown.
  2. Travel to Junktown and find the Tournament Clerk.
  3. Speak to the Clerk and choose to join as a team (with your party) or solo.
  4. Wait for the 30-minute sign-up period to end.
  5. When your match is ready, you are automatically teleported to the arena.
  6. During the 30-second pre-fight phase, loot the Gear crates to arm yourself.
  7. When barriers drop, eliminate the opposing team. Stay inside the shrinking safe zone.
  8. After the match, you are returned to Junktown with your original gear restored.
  9. Repeat for up to 5 Swiss rounds and potentially elimination rounds.
