Dung Shoveling is a safe and reliable early-game activity that provides a steady source of Bottle Caps and Experience. Some wastelanders even claim it is the most enjoyable activity you can do while completely naked.
While the rewards are modest, new characters can use them to purchase basic supplies, ammunition and starter equipment.
A Shovel is required for this job. After all, no self-respecting wastelander wants to clean brahmin pens with their bare hands.
Most major towns contain a brahmin pen somewhere within the settlement. Pens located in safe towns are usually the most competitive, as many new players gather there to earn their first caps.
Preparation and How to start
First, speak to the Brahmin Tender located near the brahmin pen.
New players can receive a free shovel from the Brahmin Tender. If you lose it, replacement shovels can be purchased from General Stores.
Once equipped or having it in inventory, start cleaning the dung piles found inside the pen. Move quickly and collect as much as possible before other players do.
Be careful not to step directly onto fresh dung. The floor can become surprisingly slippery, and nobody wants to end up face-first in brahmin droppings.
After cleaning the pen, speak to the Brahmin Tender again to receive your rewards.
Rewards
Each cleaned dung pile grants:
- 5 Bottle Caps
- 5 Experience Points

Tips
- Safe-town pens often have the highest competition, so check out unsafe towns pens when you look jackpots.
- Brahmins only poop when there are players near by.
- Combine dung shoveling with other early-game activities like Box Delivery to get most of each locations you visit.
Secrets
- Very rarely, a brahmin may launch its contribution with such force that it lands outside the pen.
- By carefully body-blocking brahmin and pushing them through the fence, players can sometimes release them into town. Freed brahmin tend to wander around and leave unexpected presents throughout the settlement.
