Fruit Farming

Fruit Mutfruit Sapling Fruit Tree

Fruit Farming is backbone of wasteland economy. Every self-sufficient player maintains a fruit farm in their base, making it one of the first production chains worth establishing.

Fruits serve two important purposes:

  • A reliable food source
  • The primary ingredient for Rot Gut

Rot Gut is used as vehicle fuel and as a crafting ingredient for items such as:

  • Molotov Cocktails
  • Flamethrower Fuel
  • Chemical Components

It can also be consumed directly to temporarily increase carry weight capacity.

Quick Guide

  • Build a base using a Tent
  • Obtain Mutfruit Saplings
  • Plant saplings using Base Building mode (U)
  • Wait for the bushes to mature
  • Harvest fruits
  • Refine fruits into Rot Gut

Getting Mutfruit Saplings

The cheapest way to obtain Mutfruit Saplings is by harvesting Fruit Trees found in Desert, Mountain, and Marsh encounters. To cut down a Fruit Tree, use:

  • Primitive Tool
  • Axe

Cutting down a tree has a chance to yield Mutfruit Saplings. The chance increases with your Scavenging skill. Fruit Trees also provide large amounts of Wood, which is required for:

  • Rot Gut production
  • Base construction
  • Various crafting recipes

Nearby Fruit Trees often have:

  • Mutfruit Bushes
  • Fallen Fruits

Be sure to gather these as well.

Example: Four Fruit Trees and Four Mutfruit Bushes in a Desert Encounter

Loot obtained from harvesting Fruit Trees

Second way to obtain Mutfruit Saplings is to directly buy them from Wanderers using bottle caps. It spawn pretty frequent in their shop.

Planting Mutfruit Bushes

To plant a Mutfruit Bush, you need:

Chemical Components can be:

  • Purchased from Doctors
  • Purchased from Wanderers
  • Crafted at a Chemistry Station
  • For new players, purchasing them is usually the easiest option.

Open Base Building mode using:

  • Press U or Outpost selection → Build Structures

Select Mutated Fruit Sapling and place it where you would like the bush to grow.

Harvesting

Freshly planted bushes require approximately 10 hours to fully mature. A mature bush is visually larger than a newly planted one. Each bush can be harvested three times before shrinking back to its smallest growth stage. Typical yield:

  • ~3 Fruits per harvest
  • Additional fruit chance from Scavenging skill

Each harvest action also grants:

  • 16 Scavenging Experience

It is generally better to maintain a farm size that matches your needs. Extremely large farms may become tedious to harvest regularly.

Refining Fruits

The most valuable use of Fruit is crafting Rot Gut. Rot Gut offers:

  • Excellent value-to-weight ratio
  • Vehicle fuel
  • Crafting ingredient for multiple products
  • Trade goods for merchants

Rot Gut can be sold to General Stores, though Doctors often offer better prices.
